The low-carb diet has long been associated with weight-loss. However, it recently hit the headlines after scientific research revealed it can also help to control symptoms in conditions such as obesity and diabetes.

Centred around real food, a low-carb diet typically prioritises natural fats over carbohydrates, reducing the amount of starchy, sugary and processed foods consumed. Going low carb isn’t about cutting out all carbohydrates. It’s about being smart about the carbohydrates we’re eating and making sure they’re relevant to our particular lifestyle and goals.

Be carb smart

From a freshly picked apple to a gourmet hamburger, carbohydrates are everywhere. They are essential to a healthy diet and a source of energy for bodily function and physical activity. But with all the confusing information out there where should you start if you want to be carb smart?

Let’s go back to the basics. Carbohydrates come in three main forms – starch, sugar and fibre – each with a different chemical structure and impact on the body. Starch and sugar (often referred to as ‘bad carbs’) are quick to break down into glucose, raising blood sugar levels. Whereas, eating food that is high in fibre (the ‘good’ carb) leaves you energised for longer. This is because the glucose is released more slowly and less likely to be stored as fat.

It is for this reason that low-carb diets traditionally reject the likes of white rice, pasta and bread for more nutritious, high-fibre foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables. But this brief can leave people feeling confused and at a loss for things to eat.

To help, we think it makes sense to break carbs down into ‘Beige’, ‘White’ and ‘Green’ carbs.

Being mindful about the amount of starch and sugar consumed, and choosing a carb smart lifestyle over any short-term diet, will set you on the right path to a healthier, more energised you.

Managing carbohydrates better has enabled many people to lose weight and even reverse their type 2 diabetes by returning blood sugar levels to a non-diabetic range. All without the need for medication.

But this carb smart approach is nothing new or revolutionary and certainly not a fad, it’s simple human biology. We just have a clearer picture of the negative effects some carbohydrates can have on the human body and how best to avoid this.

This improved understanding comes at the right time, when obesity and type 2 diabetes are at an all time high and lifestyle related diseases have the highest mortality rate. It’s no wonder an increasing number of healthcare professionals are putting their support behind a smarter approach to carbohydrates and rolling this out to patients.
