Welcome home, team Row4Victory!

Row4Victory team celebrating after rowing across the Atlantic

We’ve only gone and done it! We rowed across the Atlantic Ocean! 39 days, 16 hours and 42 minutes!

A huge congratulations to Team Row4Victory, the awesome foursome from Yorkshire who finished fifth in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2018. Setting sail on 12th December 2018, they voluntarily swapped Christmas at home with their loved ones to race against 27 other teams from La Gomera, Canary Islands to the finish line, Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua.

The four friends, Fraser Mowlem, Will Quarmby, Duncan Roy and Glyn Sadler battled against 3,000 nautical miles of unrelenting seas, unpredictable conditions, sleep deprivation, hunger and injury in what is described as the ‘World’s toughest endurance race’.

The aim, to raise money for two fantastic charities Royal British Legion and Soldier On! (Further details can be viewed on the Row4Victory website).

As soon as we heard of Row4Victory and their plans to take on the Atlantic, we knew we had to be involved somehow. We were approached by rower Will’s wife, a valued customer who stocks Purition in her Quarmby’s Deli located just outside of York. She knew how beneficial our products would be to the team and the rest, as they say, is history.

Rowing around the clock – 2 hours on, 2 hours off – for several weeks is no mean feat and would certainly take its toll, both physically and mentally. Burning more than 5000 calories a day meant the right nutrition was essential for the guys and we were more than happy to offer our natural, real food alternative to help with this.

Stirring Purition into porridge meant each team member was getting a healthy dose of protein, natural fats and fibre as well as plenty of slow releasing vitamins and minerals to help their body refuel and recover before taking back the oars. Knowing their nutrition was in tact, meant they could dig deep and continue full steam ahead across the waves.

“You can feel the food and its calories go to work, you recover faster and can work harder on the oars.”

Team Row4Victory crossed the finishing line on 21 January 2019 at 03:32 GMT (23:32 local time). After years of planning, dedication and training followed by months of preparation and sacrifice it must have been the most wonderful and overwhelming experience.

A fantastic adventure that they didn’t want to end, but simultaneously feeling ecstatic to be back on dry land with friends, family and the daily comforts often taken for granted.

“It’s hard to put into words how good this moment was. It wasn’t just embracing loved ones after 39 days spent in the open ocean but also the realisation of 2 years of hard work and commitment to our campaign resulting in us achieving our goal; to safely and successfully row across the Atlantic Ocean.” – Duncan Roy

Now back in their beloved Yorkshire it’s time for Team Row4Victory to celebrate their huge achievement. What started as four rowers has organically developed into a vast network of friends, family, sponsors and supporters, so their Welcome Home Pizza Party on 9 March should be quite the event! It will provide a great opportunity for everyone to get together, share stories and raise a glass in aid of the team’s two amazing charities; Royal British Legion and Soldier On!

Purition is proud to have helped fuel Row4Victory across the waves. Thank you for letting us be a part of such a fantastic adventure and we can’t wait to see what you take on next!
