This year World Health Day is focusing on diabetes – a cause close to our heart – but why is it so important?
About 347 million people worldwide currently have diabetes and there is an emerging global epidemic that can be traced back to rapid increases in obesity, eating an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. By 2030, diabetes is predicted to become the 7th leading cause of death in the world and deaths from diabetes are projected to rise by more than 50% in the next 10 years.
All this from a disease which is controllable and largely preventable. 90% of cases are type 2 diabetes and simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. Maintaining a normal body weight, engaging in regular physical activity and eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk.

Just thirty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days and a healthy diet can drastically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes?
