The word ‘keto’ was the most googled food-related topic in the world in 2019, and we can’t say we’re surprised. When done right, this low-carb, high-fat diet is prized for its ability to burn fat, improve mental focus and, in some cases, put type-2 diabetes into remission.
The keto lifestyle essentially turns the body into a fat-burning machine. By eating fewer carbs and more fat, the body uses fat instead of carbs as its primary fuel source. The body ends up in a metabolic state called ketosis and becomes extremely efficient at burning fat. There’s no denying that it can be a great way to eat, too, with foods like cheese, meat, fish, avo’s and eggs firmly on the menu!
It’s this way of eating that lead to Ashley Thompson’s — known to Instagram as @atketo — keto transformation. Since starting keto in July of 2019 he’s lost an incredible 100lb but gained much more — in his own words, ‘confidence, respect and self-love’.

Ashley Thompson’s keto transformation
My name is Ashley Thompson (@atketo), I’m 28 years old and from South-East London.
I was in a rough place last year, struggling with mental & physical health. I know something had to change, but I didn’t know where to start.
I started from a mental health aspect, as I believe everything begins with having the correct mindset. Once I began to understand my own mind, something inside me just switched on. I was focused. I had a clear understanding of what I needed to do to become a fitter, healthier version of myself.
When it comes to nutrition, knowledge is power
I came across the keto lifestyle back in January 2019. It was one of those new year resolutions. I came across a YouTuber doing it and I thought, I’ll try that. But I had no real knowledge of nutrition and my approach was low carb rather than keto. I didn’t have the correct understanding of how important fat was.
I tried a low carb diet back in 2012/2013. That was my first weight loss journey I had ever experienced. But looking back, my approach was wrong and I didn’t have the right knowledge to make it sustainable. But what I will say is the mistake I made, allowed me to learn from them and I’m thankful for that.
Fast forward to July 2019 and the lightbulb switched on. I started researching properly into keto. Knowledge is truly power and having the resources, such as the internet, at our fingertips is something we shouldn’t take for granted.
Weight-loss has been just one of many keto benefits
I’ve been following a ketogenic lifestyle for nearly over a year now and I love it!
I’ve experienced so many benefits while following a ketogenic lifestyle. In my ebook ‘How I Started My Ketogenic Lifestyle’, I explain that weight-loss is just one of the benefits I’ve experienced. Others include improved mood, better sleep, discipline, endurance, high energy levels… but the list goes on!
My biggest achievement so far is being able to have self-love and acceptance for myself. My weight-loss has been truly amazing, but to be able to just accept you for who you are and not worry what others think is truly empowering.
My words of wisdom for anyone else looking to follow in my footsteps would be to set out what you want to achieve, organise a plan, then put that plan to action. Preparation is key and knowledge is power. You can achieve great things when you have control of your mindset.
